Hélène Cixous nasceu em 1937 em Orã, na Argélia. A autora deixou a Argélia em 1955 e iniciou seus estudos na França, obtendo a Agrégation (um dos concursos mais importantes no setor da educação francesa) em Inglês em 1959 e defendendo, quase uma década depois, sua tese de doutorado sobre James Joyce. Na década de 1960, participa de diversas iniciativas dos movimentos de mulheres no país e do movimento contestatório que tomou conta das universidades em Paris, em maio de 1968. Ao lado de Jacques Derrida, com quem nutre uma forte amizade ao longo de toda a vida, participa da criação da Universidade de Vincennes (Paris 8), onde funda o hoje chamado Centro de Estudos Feministas e de Estudos de Gênero, pioneiro na Europa.
A autora começa a publicar em 1967 ("Le prénom de Dieu") e não para: contam-se hoje quase cinquenta obras de ficção, mais de trinta ensaios e quatorze peças de teatro, pelas quais recebeu diversos prêmios, como o Prêmio Médicis em 1969 e o Prêmio Marguerite Duras em 2014. Ficou conhecida no Brasil por ter sido uma das grandes promotoras da obra de Clarice Lispector na França, na Inglaterra e nos Estados Unidos.
"O riso da Medusa" é, provavelmente, o texto mais célebre de Hélène Cixous. Escrito em 1975, foi quase imediatamente traduzido em inglês e em dez outras línguas, tornando-se um clássico na história dos feminismos ocidentais e dos estudos de gênero. Na França, no entanto, "O riso…" só foi reeditado em 2010 pelas Éditions Galilée, junto com o ensaio Sorties (1975), edição a partir da qual foram feitas as traduções presentes na nossa edição. |
